When you have made the decision to work at home, then you probably want to invest some time, money, and effort into building a home office. Any room or part of a room can be turned into a home office, but if you are serious about your home-based job or business then you need to do more than just buy some cheap home office furniture. You will need to do some research into some good home office equipment, and carefully choose each home office accessory. Your home office should be specifically tailored to your business needs, and every home office product you choose should be useful and reliable.

Designing your home office
The first thing that you want to do is decide on your home office interior design. You may already have a place where you have been using your computer and its various accessories, but things may need to be changed now. If you will now be working at home full time, or even part time, you will need a fully functional home office. Whether for a large office or a small office, home office equipment should be situated in such a way that everything will be in the most efficient place. For instance, if you will be doing a lot of printing when you are working, then your home office printer should not be in a place where you continually have to walk across the room to retrieve what you’ve printed.
After you have decided on the area or room where your home office will be, make a sketch of the area and then decide where all of your office equipment should be. Perhaps in the area you have chosen it would be better to have a home office corner desk. Draw the corner desk where you think it should be. Decide what equipment you will need, such as some quality home office furniture other than your desk, and add them into your drawing, labeling each item. Draw lightly; you may be doing some erasing and re-drawing as you go along. It’s best to take your time when you are designing home office space – you want to be able to live happily with the final product for a long time. With this kind of preparation, you can make even the smallest space into a functional and productive home office.
Furnishing your home office
Now that you know what kind of furniture and equipment that you need for your home office, it is time to actually shop for it. Most likely you already have your computer and printer, but there will probably be other things that you need. If you will be sending documents back and forth to clients, customers, your employer, or other businesses, then you will need a fax machine. If you will be working with forms that you need to sign and copy, a scanner would probably be a good idea. Have a list ready of the furniture and equipment that you need and start shopping. Many computer stores have all of the equipment necessary for a home office, but be sure to choose one that sells quality equipment at reasonable prices. Never be afraid to shop around – you want to get the most for your money.
Even though you will have a drawing of your home office, as well as a list of the equipment that you need, don’t be afraid to change your mind once you are out shopping. Though you may intend to buy a new printer as well as a scanner and a fax machine separately, there are machines that you can buy that can do all of these things. You may be able to save some money buying these items this way, but keep in mind that the more complex the equipment, the more that can go wrong with it. It is strictly a judgment call, and the final decision is always up to you.
All in all, your goal is to design and build a home office that is productive, efficient, and is one in which you enjoy working. Don’t forget about making your home office aesthetically pleasing – you want to feel comfortable and happy working there. Most likely you will be in your home office for hours at a time; there’s no reason why it should look like the Home Land Security Office. Personalize your office – make it reflect your tastes. Organize home office equipment and furniture so that it is functional but also pleasing to the eye. Add color and design as well as functionality to your home office. With planning and a little imagination, your home office should serve you well for a long time.
